Resource Within You to Overcome Crisis

Analysts say that our nation is heading towards the path of destruction. Economic crisis, terrorism, corrupt politicians etc are menacing threats to our country. But instead of lamenting upon the situations, it is our duty as believers to help the nation overcome the present crisis creatively. How can we deal with the mounting problems before us? By seeking Divine Intervention. Everywhere we are able to see conventions, crusades, healing ministries so on and so forth. There is one thing which we do not find, and that is PRAYER.

Now our nation is in dire need of Prayer. Prayer meetings, Prayer fellowships, Prayer days, Whole Night Prayers, Fasting Prayers should become the order of the day. Yes, let us fill our nation with Prayer. Let us encourage one another for Payer.

Our nation is in the verge of a Revival. The nation is ready for it like a woman who is in labor pain eager to bring forth her child. The revival which we have been expecting is very near and the nation is throbbing for that to happen. In many parts of the country people are craving to see the revival. One can notice the mushrooming of small gatherings everywhere. With out any distinction of denomination people co-operate and come together for prayer in several areas of North India. Being believers, are we performing our duty?

Let's separate our homes for Prayer

In Delhi, while furnishing their homes many consider the feasibility of conducting prayer meetings. Priority would be given for organizing prayer meetings while the dcor is done. Many people travel in two wheelers, leaving their cars aside to save money for the Kingdom of God. What do these things point to? Revival is very near, at out door step. While writing this in a cold winter morning, I can see in my spirit, masses accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

The time has come for us to wake up from slumber and act. It does not matter where you are - whether in the front row or the back. If not leading from the front, we should support and lend a helping hand to those who lead us. Stephen could not do mighty feats. But he could win Paul for Christ. Paul's transformation became a great event in the history of the Church. This happened at the cost of Stephen's life.

Here, I am not saying that you should also go to that extent. Think of the many things that could be achieved if selfish motives are shed. Reflect upon this and decide what can be done.

In North Korea - Pyongyang Teaches Us A Lesson

North Korea, land of many surprises.

Shaped like a rocket, nose like a needle, largest structure in all of the land. It's the Ryugyong Hotel. Meant to be the largest hotel in the world, it met a few obstacles in its construction. The concrete was of poor quality. The elevators could not operate in its crooked shafts. Power failures nation-wide plus the famine of the 90's finally shut it down. The only real sign of ongoing "life" is a construction crane perched forever at the summit of the building. I say "real" because postcards show the building all lit up and wonderful. This is an unfortunate manipulation of facts, using trick photography. One feels sorry for the builders of the colossus, the Baekdu Mountain Architects and Engineers. For those who have a glimmer of recognition about that name, from Mt. Baekdu has come the Korean gods, the present leader. And now, well, the world's tallest pile of useless concrete.

As for the hotel's handle,Ryugyong, that's the old name for Pyongyang, "capital of [weeping] willows" . It is aptly named. It was to have 3000 rooms, seven revolving restaurants, and a worldwide reputation, all by 1989. Well, it got the latter, not as expected, and costing the country 2% of its gross domestic product that year! It is a deserted place of sorrow and shame now.

This aborted dream is not only typical of the whole North Korean project under Communism, but very reminiscent of some of our own personal plans. Christians, we've been warned, and comrade Leader has now given a modern day illustration for us, to sink forever into our awareness: Finish what you start when Jesus leads you into His work. Above all, finish carrying the cross until it becomes the crown. I close with the words of the Master Builder Himself in Luke 14:27-30:

"Whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be my disciple. For, which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it, lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, "This man began to build and was not able to finish."

The Story of Chosun, Part 2

In the days we Christians call "bewteen the testaments", around 193 BC, the central section of the Korean peninsula is invaded by Chinese led by one Winan. This invasion effectively ends the Kija dynasty (see Part 1), and the last emperor of Kija, named Kijun, heads south.

But nothing seems to be permanent in Chosun. In 107 BC an edict goes forth from China's Emperor. All Chinese need to come home. This Korean kingdom must fall altogether. One year later, Winan's dynasty ends, and the kingdom is divided by the Chinese into 4 provinces. The territory covered would stretch today from Seoul in the south, the Han River, to the norteastern provinces of North Korea.

But we said that Kijun looked southward for his own destiny, which he found among the tribal peoples living there. The people of the far southern section of the land have been considered "different" from the northerners, previewing the division that lingers still.

From Chinhan, Mahan, and Pyonhan Kijun is slowly able to build a new kingdom. Historians say that these people acted a lot like our native American tribes in terms of worship, dance , dress etc. Could it be that Koreans are in some way connected to the first Western tribes? So what would their origin have been? Some have conjectured Japan, or Malaysia, or even Polynesia. Southern Korea is after all situated on the waters.

Kijun goes the way of the earth, but his dynasty lasts about 200 years. His 7th descendant in 57 BC founds what will become the main power of the peninsula for some time, the Kingdom of Silla. They are for quite awhile a peaceful people, but eventually they take all. Their initial territory covers from the southern coast to the Han River (Seoul).

Only a few years later, 35 BC, Korguryo is formed. It stretches northward from the boundary of Silla past the present border of North Korea, the Yalu River. These are a people of spirit worship, much pride, aggressive behavior, and, according to Professor Hulbert, immorality. Korea watchers will remember that this is the nation immortalized by the long-running video series "Dae Jo-young".

Then in 16 BC comes Pakje, a small kingdom covering an area in the south next to Silla.

These are the three territories that will together form the dramatic rise to power and interaction on the Korean peninsula. But one other player in the drama cannot be forgotten. Some of Japan's erring citizens band together and become the "Vikings" of the day, often raiding Silla and later civilizations.

When Jesus walked this earth, the scene was something like this in Korea: China is forever fearful of the growth of Korguryo. Silla seems to be under her control, but Korguryo is regularly threatening the status quo. Strife begins. These two powers will struggle for eight centuries. Silla will see China take power from Korguryo and Pakje before it is over.

Someone has observed that in South Korea today, many of the names used are the same as were used in Silla: Yi, Choe, Son, Chung, Pak, Kim, Suk, Yang, So, Im, Hyun. And in the north names like Cho & Han are more prominent. It all makes us wonder how real this present division might be.

Of course, backward looks for the Christian are not as important as praying for God to take a people out of this land for Himself today, the people He saw from before the foundation of the world. And He of course will do that.

But to look back at the many tragedies that have befallen this people and to commiserate with the modern day descendants is, I think, also a useful activity. Already we have seen reversals and upsets and violence and broken lives. But the Koreans will persist to be. By God's grace, and as they keep receiving their true "hero", Jesus Christ, Koreans will continue to fill the earth with good things.
